Sebastopol Geese
These unusual and very pretty goose are common in the Black Sea area.
Sebastopol geese are a medium, small white goose with long curling feathers
all over. They can be grey or saddleback, but the preference is white. The
greys are recognized overseas, but not here as yet.
First imported into England in 1836 after the end of the Crimean War, and
subsequent work with them recently, showed that if inbred using the best
curly feathered bird, the plumage that resulted resembled that of a Silkie
fowl.
It has also been said that the curly feathers are the very warmest and best
for human use.
They are a docile and friendly breed, average layer of 30-40 eggs, useful as
a meat bird, yet very ornamental look at.
